Our Conversion Stories and Typesetting a Family History
Our Conversion Stories is a 27-page family history compiled, edited, and typeset by me. The book highlights my ancestors who first joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most of these ancestors were also the first in my family to immigrate to America and to move to Utah. I created this book so I could honor them for all of the sacrifices they made to get me and my family where we are today and so I could help my immediate and extended family remember these amazing, brave people.
I edited over 40 pictures in Adobe Photoshop, cropping them to be square, fixing the levels and lighting, patching up anything that needed to be patched up, and changing the coloring so they would all match. I created the graphics for the cover and the family trees in Adobe Illustrator. The leaves of the tree on the cover come from my family's fan chart. The leaves themselves represent the people in my family tree that are highlighted throughout the book. I put everything together in Adobe InDesign. It was challenging to make everything fit how I wanted it to, especially in the margins and with the subheadings. As I typeset the manuscript, I looked carefully at and fixed word breaks, word stacks, separated logical units, widows, orphans, single word lines, and more.
Below you will find the cover, the title page, and two spreads from the book.
